8 months post natal review

Baby Jaden turned 8 months old just 4 days ago.  He is now an active and cheerful baby boy with four budding teeth,  allowing him to enjoy his favourite fruit and vegetable puree. Life with a baby is tiring but joyful. Bernard and I are enjoying every quality moment spent with little Jaden.

Well, instead of writing about Jaden (again!), this post will be a review of my post natal condition.

Coccyx Pain
I remembered I complained about coccyx (tailbone) pain a few months ago in an earlier post. My coccyx was injured when I delivered Jaden, caused by the pressure generated when the baby passed through the birth canal.   It had caused severe pain whenever I changed  my position while sitting or rising from a sitting position. It also affected my usual exercise routine. It was difficult for me to even perform basic Yoga posture or brisk walking on a treadmill. Swimming becomes the better, if not the only option. I was told by an orthopaedic that the condition will heal by itself  3-4 weeks after labour. Unfortunately, it took longer for my case. Life was very demanding for a working mom that has no helping hand from a maid or close family members that are staying 400km away from us.  Getting adequate rest and enough time for relaxation was totally a luxury option. So, while I kept procrastinating to attend physiotherapy sessions, suddenly one day, 6 months after labour, I noticed that there was no more pain around my coccyx area. Yes, without me realizing, my body had quietly done its part to cure itself. I guess the reason why it took longer than the predicted recovery period was solely because I constantly did not have enough rest, thus the body has to take longer to heal.

Menstrual cycle
As a PCOS patient, I am used to not having regular period. Before I miraculously conceived Jaden, my menstrual cycle could stretch up to more than 100 days per cycle. I was trying very hard to breast feed my boy until I gave up when he was 4 months old. My milk supply was just simply too low despite of constant latching and pumping. You may read about my struggle to breast feed here.  My period came on the 2nd month after the labour and ever since, it comes regularly every month. This is a good sign, isn't it? So, does giving birth help rectify hormonal imbalance? I guess in my case, the answer is not definite. My menstrual cycle has become longer month after month, starting from 25 days, to 30 days and 35 days recently. It looks like the saying of 'PCOS will follow you for life' is true. This also means that if we decide to try for another baby in the future, it is very likely that we have to count on fertility aid to induce regular ovulation.

Body Weight
I gained 18kg throughout my pregnancy. At this point of writing, I still have 3kg to shed off before I go back to my original weight. I blamed the slow process of losing weight to PCOS (it feels good to have something to blame, isn't it?!). I did not follow any radical diet plan nor having extra cash to patronize those throat-cutting slimming centres out there in the market. Eating balance and smaller portion of meal is all I have practised. I did try to squeeze in  exercise as part of the daily routine in my busy schedule. However, it ended up adding more stress into my life. So, instead of having military-like workout schedule, swimming twice a week is what I am doing now. I will come home an hour earlier from work, jump into the pool and swim for half an hour. After that, it took me another half an hour to take a quick shower and blow dry my thick long hair before I left the house to pick up Jaden from the nanny.

Having a baby has definitely transformed my life. I hardly have time to read a book or watch a movie now. Going out from the house can no longer be a casual decision.  Other than carrying extra 'baggage' that includes a baby bag and a stroller, we now only visit places that have proper baby room. Having meals in the restaurants are very challenging too. It will be lucky for us if the baby is sleeping , but most of the time, with a demanding baby around, you can only choose to gobble up the food as quickly as possible.

However, our bundle of joy is worth every blood, sweat and tears. We have no regret at all!

BFM89.9 - The Bigger Picture of Fertility by Dr. Prashant

2 years ago,  in a business meeting with a documentary director, I came across the name of the person that have changed my life.   The meeting was initially meant to get me involved as a producer in an upcoming documentary. However, at the end, things did not turn out as my work schedule was clashing with the documentary's. However, we continued to chit chat and somehow, the conversation directed itself to his 1-year-old twin boys and that was the first time I came across the name of Dr. Prashant Nadkarni.

During that time, I was struggling to have my own kid. This was not so much about the pestering from families to produce a child to carry the family name, this was also not so much about being childless will lead to a broken marriage as I was lucky enough to marry a man that told me millions of time that the main reason he married me was not to have children. After all, it was more about to figuring out the main reason of why I cannot get pregnant, after trying for 5 years.

I have been seeing a few fertility experts prior meeting up with Dr. Prashant, some of them from prestigious fertility centres. One of them diagnosed me incorrectly that both my Fallopian tubes were blocked; one of them insisted that IVF was my only solution and many of them refused to listen to my side of story but instead rushed me through their 'default' consultation just because there was a long queue of patients waiting outside of their consultation rooms.

Dr. Prashant was just 'another' fertility expert that I told myself 'to give it a try' before I persuaded myself to accept the fact that being childless was my fate. Eventually, it proved that he was not 'just another' doctor, but was the right fertility expert that has changed my life.

I will forever remember his confident expression when he said this to my face: ""No big problem here, just PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome), and trust me, you will get pregnant!"

Just three months after following Dr. Prashant's treatment, little Jaden was conceived naturally (and definitely  unexpectedly!) and was born in April 2012.

Sharing here with you is an interview clip by Business FM 89.9 with Dr. Prashant back in 28 Aug 2012, which was again, I came across accidentally today! You may click the following link to access the interview clips.

If you are still waiting for a miracle to have a child, I sincerely wish that an angel will knock by your door soon!

Edible Craft @ Bento Workshop

A good friend of mine is conducting the following bento-making workshops in November and December 2012. This mother of 2 has been featured in The Star, Astro and TV3 for her passion in bento making.

Yesterday, a bunch of old friends had a wonderful all-ladies-no-husband-no-kid gathering session in her house. It was an enjoyable chill-up session and under her guidance, I had managed to make and brought back my first ever 'edible craft' for my hubby and Jaden (of course, he is too young to taste it yet!)

I also noticed that making cute bento box like this is a good way to destress!
So, if you are also into edible craft or simply want to add more colour and surprise to the food of your love ones, why not consider having some fun in these bento workshops?

I have promised my friend to help her up in the classes, so hope to see you there!

An old wife's ritual to stop drooling

Cruising into 6 months old, baby Jaden now has 2 tiny teeth breaking through his lower gum.

Overall, he is adapting fine to it except constantly droolling excessively. Wiping him to keep him dry seems like a never ending task. We also have to put a bib over him to prevent his shirt from being soaked up.

One of my friends told me that both her sons did not drool because she performed a ritual on the babies when they were 4 months old. This ritual has been practiced on every babies in her family except for her elder brother who married a Caucasian lady. And guess what? only his brother's children drool like nobody's business in her entire family!

I told my mum about this ritual and even she laughed at me for believing such an old wives' tale. My husband and I were skeptical about it too. However, I said no harm trying it just to test if it really works.  Without having high hopes, I got my mum to buy a packet of 'pong piah' ( a type of Chinese traditional biscuits with white sugar filling) from Penang during her recent trip to KL.

So, this was what we did.

1) Prepare a piece of 'pong piah' and some red thread.

2. Poke a hole in the middle of 'pong piah' and pull the red thread through it, to form a 'necklace'.

3) Wear the 'necklace' over baby Jaden

 4) Wipe the biscuit slightly on his mouth and repeat the following 'mantra' for a few times:
" Baby stop drooling, let his saliva dry up".
I actually said this 'mantra' in Hokkien. So, it sounds like this:
"Baby mai lau nuah, cui nuah cia ta ta".

5) After that, I, as the mother of the baby must eat up the whole biscuit, even though it was already soaked with Jaden's drool (yuck!).

If you were to ask me did this ritual work? The answer is it did. Though Jaden did not stop drooling entirely, but it has dramatically and amazingly reduced!

Believe it or not? Hahahha!

Eczema......Cooling Down

As per my previous post on Jaden's eczema condition, I am glad to see that his condition has improved, although not cured entirely.

After consuming 4 tins of NAN 1 HA milk, I have decided to let him resume the normal NAN 1 Pro milk, as his eczema still flared up when he was on HA milk. This showed that his skin condition is not caused by allergy to cow's milk, but more to some other yet to be known intrinsic factors.  Stopping him from consuming HA milk was also a relief to us (and him, maybe?!), as we did not need to endure his extremely smelly poo and fart anymore. Well, this was obviously one of the traits if your baby consumes NAN 1HA milk. At first, I thought something was wrong with his digestive system. My worries eased up after I had 'googled' and found out funny comments by so many annoyed parents, even one of them regarded her baby's poo and fart as toxic waste and gas! At home, Bernard even wore a mask when he cleaned Jaden's poo. I couldn't stop laughing every time I think that my little angel baby has become a skunk!

Sad to say that Moogoo's Irritable Skin Balm (ISB)  doesn't seem to work like wonders anymore for Jaden's eczema, probably his skin is immune to the effect of the cream. His eczema continues to flare up and I had no choice but to apply Elomet 0.1% to stop the outbreak. A pharmacist friend whose son (now 10 months old) has Eczema since 2 months old, told me that she uses Elomet too and it is safe as long as you don't use it consecutively for more than a week. She would apply it for 4-5 days and stop when the dry and red skin clears up. Apply again when it comes back.

Convinced by her assurance, I began to apply thin layer of Elomet lotion on Jaden's affected area. Being steroid phobia, I would only apply it for 2 days, then stop when his skin became clear and smooth again.

However, this would only last for about 1 week or maximum 10 days before it flared up again. This went on  for 3 cycles before we decided to try a new remedy, adding half a cap full of Lactacyd into Jaden's bath water.  Meanwhile, I only use a small amount of organic shampoo to wash his hair and no soap is used to wash his body as Lactacyd already works as a cleansing agent to the skin. It has been 2 weeks now, his skin remains clear and smooth with no signs of flaring up at the time this post was written. Thanks to my mother-in-law who consistently 'pestered' us to use Lactacyd every time she calls to check on Jaden's condition.  She got this useful tips from an old nurse. It sounds like the advice from this old nurse is far more effective and practical than those from paediatrician and dermatologist specialist.

My current routine in controlling Jaden's eczema, other than bathing him in water added with Lactacyd, includes applying Moogoo ISB on his prone-to-flare up skin areas ( chest, tummy and feet) four times a day (morning x 1, mid day x 2, evening x 1). This helps to maintain an optimum level of moisture and protection layer to his skin. I also carry along Moogoo ISB every time we go out and apply it on him whenever necessary. I guess if we continue this routine religiously for long term, very likely, Jaden will grow up and stand a great chance to become advertisement talent for skincare product!

Oh! My Coccyx!

When I gave birth to Jaden 3 months ago, my coccyx (tailbone) was injured, caused by the pressure generated when the baby passed through the birth canal. This type of injury always happens when the baby is bigger in size or the mother has a narrow pelvis, but for your information my baby was only 2.61 kg and I have big butt.

I have severe pain on my pelvic area whenever I change my position while sitting or rise from a sitting position. I was referred to a orthopedic surgeon a day after my delivery.  The surgeon came to my ward for examination and told me that what I was experiencing was common for those who went through vaginal delivery and the condition would recover by itself after 3-4 weeks. The most he can do at that moment was to prescribe some pain killer if I want ( I did not opt for this as I wanted to breastfeed). The consultation took about 5 minutes and I was charged RM180.

After my confinement, the pain had subsided but not entirely. I am still in pain, especially now when I have gone back to work and couldn't avoid from sitting long hour in the office. I have read a lot of similar cases in the Internet but most people are still in pain despite having through many types of different treatments like physiotherapy, laser treatment and steroid injection. These treatments, to an extent reduce the pain, but not to cure the condition. Consistent follow-up treatments are required too. There were some extreme cases where people decided to get their tailbones removed, after bearing enough pain for more than 10 years.

Definitely, I am reluctant to live with the pain for the rest of my life. Does anyone of you having the similar problem? Can you share with me what have you done? Thank you!

Angel Baby Evil Eczema

Jaden is 3 months old now. He is healthy and kicking except for his eczema condition that comes and goes. Well, this is the typical stubbornness of Eczema, isn't it?

He was first prescribed with a non-medicated cream, Ceradan.

However, after applying it generously 4 times a day for a week, there was no improvement on his skin condition. The dry patches on his feet, wrists and navel area in fact became more red.  Luckily, Jaden seemed to be not irritated by his skin condition, however I started to become very worried. Questions without absolute answers began to linger in my mind.

"What if his skin cracks and he is in pain?"
"Did I eat anything wrong that trigger his eczema through my breastmilk?"
"What moisturizer should I use next?"
"What if he has to use steroid-base medication to control his condition, what are the side effects?"

And then...came one night when Bernard had to attend the wedding of one of his very important client.  He was hesitating, whether he should attend the wedding and leave his wife and son at home on a Sunday night or just make an excuse not to attend the wedding.  I told him to go as I have no problem taking care of Jaden on my own. Ultimately, he went but decided to come back before the dinner ended.
His attendance led us to the discovery of MooGoo Irritable Skin Balm (ISB), a non-steroid cream that was recommended by a guest that Bernard met at the wedding dinner. (Apparently, other than mothers, fathers also couldn't stop talking about their children to others!) According to the lady, this cream works wonders for her eczema and best of all, this Australian made cream is 100% herbal base with no steroid content, thus is safe to be used even on infant.

The next day, I went to Caring Pharmacy to get a tube of Moogoo ISB. The price was RM58.60, after a 15% discount.

After applying the cream for 2 days, Jaden's dry skin area became flaky white. I got a shocked and thought his condition had worsen. However, luckily I was wrong. The flaky skin condition was actually the sign of recovery.  On the 3rd day of application, Jaden's skin was 80% recovered, redness and dryness had disappeared, leaving only some rough surface when you touch the affected area. This was a great improvement and we were very happy, thus instantly fell in love with MooGoo! Nevertheless, we continue to apply ISB on daily basis to prevent any reoccurrence.

The good days lasted only for a week, before the dry red patches developed again, this time with another additional area, his stomach. Since it was due for his 3rd month's vaccination, we decided to consult Dr. Chai to see what else we can do.

While advised to continue applying MooGoo ISB to maintain the moisture level of Jaden's skin, Elomet lotion was prescribed, and I knew this drug contains steroid. Before I managed to clarify the side effect of steroid on baby, Dr. Chai proactively explained that this medication although contains steroid, but the amount used was very minimal and if used correctly will not bring any harm.

( I have applied Elomet on Jaden once after coming back from the hospital, but have decided to stop after finding out that FDA America does not encourage children below 2 to use Elomet lotion/cream. One man's meat is another man's poison. I just love my son too much. Hence, choosing not to take the risk to expose him to steroid, even though at a very low dose, at his young age.)

At the same time, we were recommended to change his formula milk from NAN 1 Pro to NAN HA 1, just in case his eczema is caused by allergy to milk protein. So, the hypothesis here is if his eczema is caused by the protein in normal formula milk, changing to HA milk will eliminate the root cause. But we have to do a little experiment here to find out the truth.  If his condition improved with no recurrence after consuming NAN HA 1 for the next two week, then the hypothesis is proven to be true.

Hmmm....for your information, the price of NAN 1 Pro, which Jaden was consuming, just went up about RM5 per box (from RM51.00 to RM 55.8, crazy, right?). Prior to this I have gone to a few baby shops and Chinese medical halls to bulk purchase the old stock. More than RM 500 was spent to stock up 2 months supply of milk. Now, what should I do with all the milk powder?

Well, this was what Dr.Chai and Bernard said almost in unison after I told them about the bulk purchase: " What is RM500, if HA version can reduce or eliminate the cause of eczema on Jaden?" So, it is obvious that if I insisted to let Jaden finish up NAN 1 Pro before we switch to NAN HA 1, I will be crowned with the label of ' a mother that put money before the health of her own child'. Of course I can choose not to think it that way, but no matter how, Jaden has begun to consume NAN HA 1 immediately after we got back from the hospital.

NAN H.A 1

These are the NAN 1 Pros that have yet to define their future!

At the time of this writing, Jaden has consumed H.A milk for 2 days. I will update the findings after 2-3 weeks. If the above mentioned hypothesis is true, can anyone suggest me what should I do with the 10 boxes of NAN 1 Pro?

Meanwhile, I have requested the baby sitter to add a cap of QV bath oil in the bath water every time she bathes Jaden. We will also continue to apply MooGoo ISB 4 times a day. Hope that his situation will be under control.

QV bath oil to moisture the skin during bath

Despite his skin condition, Jaden is a healthy and happy baby. He starts smiling since 2.5 months old. This is indeed very emotional rewarding to me and Bernard. And again....he did not cry when he was jabbed this time!

Milk, milk, milk, where are you?

We have finally found NAN 1 Pro as the formula milk that suit Jaden the most.  He had tried Enfalac A+ (which made him very hyper and restless -grunting and snorting non-stop) and Similac (caused diarrhea) before this.

From our experience, you can never say which formula milk is the best, instead you can only say which brand is most suitable for your baby, and you probably have to keep trying different formulas before you find the right one. Usually, getting samples from your doctor would be best, however we did not have that luxury as we had chosen a "baby-friendly" hospital where breast feeding is encouraged, thus doctors are not allowed to give away samples.

All the while, I had truly wished to fully breast feed Jaden. However, sometimes things do not turn out the way we want. Despite consistent latching on and pumping, my milk did not really come. I have also tried almost all the possible remedies:

1) Drink double boiled young papaya soup, fish soup, red bean soup, chinese herbal 'chuan tong cao' (川通 )soup
2) Drink RM99 per pack “guarantee to get milk” Sacred Tea
3) Take GNC Fenugreek supplement pill
4) Take rasberry leaf tea
5) Drink Enfamama lactating milk
6) Get postnatal masseur to 'unblock the milk ducts'
7) Visit a lactation consultant - was asked to eat a lot of fattening food like cheese cake and chocolate cake
*I did not try remedy #7, as I think my baby needs a healthy mom to take care of him, and not one who is stuffed with unhealthy trans fat.

After all the effort, my best yield was only 40ml after pumping both sides for 45 minutes. This made me quite depressed, especially the first 2 weeks. I also had crack and bleeding nipples due to over pumping. The pain was unbearable.

I did not know what is the reason of me not having enough milk. And then, out of curiosity, I googled ' PCOS and breast feeding', I sort of got an answer to justify my situation. Research shows that 1/3 of PCOS patients have very low volume of breast milk. Tada.....I was the 'lucky' 1/3! Although I am not very sure that if PCOS is the reason of me having low volume of breast milk, at least this finding has lifted a heavy emotional burden off me. A chat with Dr. Paul also made me believe that being a good mother and mother-child bonding is not solely depends on breastfeeding your child. His comforting advice has encouraged me to face my situation honestly and accept who I am.

Nevertheless, I will still continue to pump and let Jaden latch on, just to maintain my supply, no matter how low the volume is. I will let Jaden have whatever I can produce, hopefully until he is 6 months old.

If you happen to fall into the same category as me, and had been told by many breast feeding fanatics (a.k.a. certain unconsiderate lactation consultants and mothers who look down on mothers that are unable to breastfeed) that the reason of you not having milk/ enough milk is because you did not try hard enough, I want you to lift up your head, look into their eyes and tell them to respect your difference. After all, you are still a good mother!

Week-9 Updates

It has been 2 months since the arrival of Jaden to our family.  I have gone back to work and reluctantly, have to put Jaden in a babysitter's hand, who stays about 3 minutes drive away from our house.

Overall, Jaden is growing well, progressing from 2.6kg during birth to 5.5kg in week-9. Taking care of a child is a life long lesson, which both Bernard and I are still learning how to become better parents each day.  Waking up twice at night to feed the baby is not an easy task, but the word 'motherhood' made me do it again and again without any grievances every night.

Today, I visited Dr.Paul for my postnatal check-up, and at the same time, we brought Jaden for his 2-month vaccination at Dr. Chai Pei Fan's clinic.  It was very convenient for us as the two doctors' clinics are just opposite each other.  Coincidentally, these two doctors somehow share some similar qualities, they are both polite, down to earth, caring and friendly.

Dr. Paul Ng and Jaden Tan. With this photo taken, Jaden will be able to know
the doctor who received him into the world in the future.
I was told that my stitches have healed completely and Dr. Paul jokingly told us that we can begin to make our 2nd baby as soon as after 6 months. We definitely wish for more children, but we also think that we should give our bodies and mind some break :) At least, let me shrink back to my pre-pregnancy weight first! After putting on 20kg (scarry, huh?!) during my pregnancy, I still have 7 kg to shed!

Jaden's has developed mild eczema on his feet, palms and navel area since about a week ago. He did  not seem to be irritated by the skin condition (yet), we have to diligently apply prescribed cream on him to prevent the condition from getting worse.

Contrary from the 1st time when he was vaccinated, Jaden did not cry at all today when Dr. Chai poked the needle into his thigh. It was a real relief to me as I still remember how heart broken his cry was last month. Probably, my tactic of telling him about the jab while on the way to the hospital has paid off. I will certainly do the same for his following jab next month :)

The Labour of Love-April 10, 2012

My baby is 6-week old today. I am stealing some time here, though seriously deprive of sleep, to share the birth experience that happened on April 10, 2012.

April 9 (Mon), 7:45am.
Woke up and experienced a warm and wet feeling down there. Decided to check it out in the washroom. Upon stepping down from the bed, I felt a flow of lukewarm sensation dripping down. Well, there was some bloody show on my underwear, and obviously the amniotic sack had just broken. I calmly stopped my hubby, who was then just about to step out from the house for work. "Darling, I think today is the day." I could feel that he instantly became panic because my EDD was actually another 15 days away, and we had just celebrated his birthday yesterday. Honestly, this was a bit out of our expectation, but the date for natural birth, unlike C-section, is never certain.

April 9 (Mon), 8:00am.
I quickly took a shower and washed my hair while hubby was busy sterilizing my breast pump and milk storage bottles in the kitchen (Well, he always wanted to do this, but keep procrastinating, haha....finally he has no more excuse to delay it).

April 9 (Mon), 8:20am.
I called up Dr. Paul and told him my situation. Confidently, he told me the baby would arrive either today evening or tomorrow morning, he asked me to take a shower and packed my bag, then report myself to the labour ward within the next 2 hours.

April 9 (Mon), 10am.
After making a few phone calls and last minute emailing to hand over my work stuffs, we made our way to Pantai Medical Centre KL.

April 9 (Mon), 10:30am.
Arrived at the hospital, went directly to the labour ward at Level 2. I was admitted to the labour room and the nurse checked my contraction level and baby's heart beat. I did not feel any contraction yet, but the nurse told me my cervix's was already opened about 3-4 cm. With the normal rate of 1cm per hour (10cm for active labour), my baby was estimated to arrive in the evening. I was not comfortable to be stripped on the bed all the time ( to allow the machine to constantly monitor the baby's heart beat and my contraction level).

The red reading indicates the baby's heart beat, the green indicates the contraction level.

I was also not used to not wearing any underwear, while having to use my thighs to hold the maxi sanitary pad between my legs to absorb the leaking amniotic water. The nurse also gave me some medicine to clear my bowel.

Another thing that bothered me was the paper-like low quality blue robe that I was asked to put on. The strings that tied the robe together were so fragile, where all of them broke just after 1-2 hour of wearing it. I tried to ignore all the discomfort and told myself to focus on the joy of receiving my baby soon. Well, as you can tell, I totally under estimated the pain of labour.

April 9 (Mon), 1pm.
Dr. Paul paid me a visit in the labour room to check my condition. The cervix’s opening maintained at 3-4cm.  The contraction was still mild. Dr. Paul suggested to induce the labour process as the risk of infection would increase, the longer the water bag had burst. However, he decided not to do it as he noticed that there was quite a great amount of water sipping out, so I should be able to feel the contraction soon and the active labour would soon come along. What a relief to me, as I have heard stories about how painful induced labour can be.  I was then injected with antibiotic to prevent any infection.

April 9 (Mon), 7pm.
The past 6 hours, hubby and I was enjoying ourselves, joking and taking photographs of me posing in my almost disintegrating paper robe, while the nurse performed a few times of cervix check, every 2 hours to be exact ( I hate the feeling of fingers poking deeply into my vagina!), but there was no improvement on the opening.  However, the contraction started to kick in soon enough. Initially, the pain was just like period pain, totally bearable.

April 9 (Mon), 9pm.
Dr. Paul, who had changed into a green Polo-T came again to check on me. The contraction started to get more serious. The smile on my face had gone. I couldn’t believe that my cervix only opened for another centimeter after so many hours. It was only 4-5 cm, I still have 5 cm to go! Dr. Paul asked me to catch some sleep (how? I am having serious menstrual-like pain!) and he would come back at 6am to receive my baby. Huh? 6am, I doubted I could bear the pain until 6am! But, I have no choice. The word ‘ Epidural’ flashes across my mind, but the stubbornness in me said I could bear the pain. Minzy, you are strong and brave! huh? huh! huh?

April 10 (Tue), 12am.
Pain, pain, pain….am I going to pass motion or what? There was a strong force pushing my bowel, something felt like about to burst out. Hubby called the nurse to check on me. As I am not sure whether it was still safe for the baby to inject epidural by then (because the labour felt so near! Yet, so far?) I was certain I would not take any anesthetic that would harm the baby. The nurse suggested another type of sedation injection (forgot the name) that was safe, which also said to be able to cut down the pain by 50%. After being persuaded by my hubby, I decided to take the injection. Well, the injection made me feel very drowsy and weak ( and I can tell you now, the sedation injection doesn’t work to cut down the pain at all!), I felt like I was sinking, into another dimension of the world. I have no word to describe the feeling……I prayed and prayed, I didn’t want to ‘sink’ anymore!

April 10 (Tue), 2:30am.
The contraction that happened every 90 seconds was so tremendous, it felt like there was a kind of massive force, trying to push something out from my ass! With one hand holding onto my hubby’s arm and one more grabbing on the steel bar at the side of the bed, I felt like my body was about to be torn into pieces. I couldn’t bear it anymore. A senior Indian midwife came in to check my condition and told me I was doing great as my cervix has opened 8cm, all the sudden! She immediately contacted Dr. Paul and another nurse quickly set up all the necessary equipment for the delivery process.

April 10 (Tue), 2:50am.
Dr. Paul stepped into the labour room in an orange Polo-T. (I have always wondered how these doctors managed to look so fresh and well-groomed this early in the morning?) By monitoring my contraction interval on the machine, the midwife and the nurse guided me to push. The Indian midwife keep ‘scolding’ me that I wasn’t doing it correctly! Come on! This was my first child, how on earth would I know how to push before hand? Can you be more considerate or at least be more patient? Both Dr. Paul and the other Malay nurse were ‘kinder’ as they use a lot of words of encouragement throughout the process.

April 10 (Tue), 3am.
After a few pushes, Dr. Paul seriously told my hubby that the baby’s head could already be seen but his heart rate was dropping with every interval of my contraction. Hence, he would perform vacuum delivery if the baby was still not out after another 2 rounds of push. Eventually, vacuum aid came in to ‘suck’ out the baby, reason being his shoulder was strapped by the umbilical cord. The cord formed a ‘safety belt’ to prevent the baby from being pushed out, no matter how hard I tried. At 3:06 am, I heard loud cries, yes the baby was out and the tremendous pain that I had experienced for many hours suddenly subsided! Our angel had finally arrived!

P/S: I totally under estimated the pain of natural birth. I have very high tolerance for pain, thus was too innocent to actually believe many people who told me that delivering a baby is as easy as laying an egg! No, it is not true at all, unless you are delivering your 10th baby! Anyway, it was a great experience and I am proud that I survive it. I will still opt for natural birth if I ever get pregnant again due to its speedy recovery after birth, but definitely ‘epidural’ would be an option.

The Arrival of Angel

Dear readers,

We are delighted to announce the arrival of our angel in the early morning of April 10, 2012. Co-incidentally, 410 is also our house number. Welcome angel, you have knocked at the right door!

At 7:45 am of April 9, I experienced bloody show and my water bag broke, 15 minutes later. The pre-labour signs were clear, though my EDD was still 16 days away. I first informed hubby, who was just about to step out from the house for work. Then, took a shower before calling up Dr.Paul's mobile at 8:15am. He instructed me to stay calm, pack my bag and admit myself to the labour ward within the next 2 hours.

I will write more on the details of the labour pocess after my confinement. The experience was intense for a first time mother like me. Overall, with a birth weight of 2.61kg,  baby Jaden was delivered via natural birth without epidural. My supportive hubby was with me throughout the labour process.

Despite extreme exhaustion, our lives are filled with happiness and gratitude ever since the arrival of Jaden. May he stay healthy, and grow up well.

P/S:  The belief of 'drinking of young coconut water in the third trimester of pregnancy can prevent jaundice in new born baby' did not work for me.  Baby Jaden's jaundice level increased to level 236 on the 3rd day, and is currently under-going phototherapy with a rented UV lamp at home. We will visit Dr. Chai Pei Fan again tomorrow, hopefully Jaden's condition is under control.

Week 37 - Maternity Check-up

Date:  4 Apr 2012 (Wed) Appointment Time: 9:30 am
Waiting Time: 20 mins

Blood pressure: 70/110
Weight Gain: 0 kg
Urine: normal

Baby heart beat: 154 bps
Baby weigh: will measure next week
Amniotic fluid level: decreased, but still at the safe zone.
Position: engaged, head turned side way (not facing my back bone), hopefully his head will be facing posterior soon, that will be the most optimum position for natural birth.

After the ultrasound session, Dr Paul spent some time to explain to me and hubby how the baby will  move through the birth canal during a natural birth. He was also very kind to tell me that I can call him anytime, even in the middle of the night if I suspect (1st time mother!) I am experiencing contraction, spotting, leaking of amniotic fluid or any other sign of labour. Anyway, he did not see any clear sign of labour yet, so most likely I will see him again for another 1 or 2 weekly check-up before the labour.

Baby, mummy's tummy is still the safest shelter for you in the whole wide universe.  If you think you need more time to prepare yourself, go ahead, take your time. Mum and dad just want you to be healthy and comfortable. Do not rush. By the way, if can, please avoid coming out on 11 Apr, it will be a national public holiday, which means charges will be doubled for any form of delivery! Hahah....please be a co-operative good baby!

Expenses:
Diagnostic/monitoring   RM 0.60
Admin fees                   RM  4.00
Consultation                 RM 50.00
Ultrasound                   RM 50.40

Week 36 - Maternity Check-up

I have been down with flu, sinusitis and buried by work lately. Since tomorrow will be week-37 check up, I told myself I must update week-36 check-up tonite, by hook or by crook.

Date:  28 Mac 2012 (Wed)
Appointment Time: 9:30 am
Waiting Time: 25 mins

Blood pressure: 77/105
Weight Gain: + 1.5kg
Urine: normal

I was down with flu, gradually leading to a full-blown sinusitis, as expected.  Dr. Paul wanted to prescribe antibiotic for me but I did not want any foreign substance affecting my baby (although doctor insisted that it was perfectly safe for me to take a course of antibiotic at this stage of the pregnancy). I decided to rely on my natural immune system to fight the virus.  The concerned doctor at the end still prescribed Clarityne and Actifed, 2 types of medication to mitigate my runny and blocked nose. 3 days of MC were also given, but I did not make use of it. Just wanted to finish as much work as I could before the baby arrives.

Baby heart beat: 157 bps
Baby weigh: 2.5kg
Amniotic fluid level: optimum
Position: head down, engaged, condusive for natural birth

During the ultrasound, we saw our beloved baby, he definitrely had packed up some fat and looked more chubby now. Of course, without fail, he was posing his signature pose, that covered part of his face with one hand. Fetal movement was strong, sometimes I could feel that he was making the 'wave' with his arms and feet in my tummy. My tummy ended up distorted whenever he performed his stunts. Hubby is the number 1 fan of the baby's performance.

By the time of this writing, the condition of my flu is getting better, though is not fully recovered. Workload wise, have managed to clear up quite a major portion. I feel more relieved and can confidently say, yes, I am ready to welcome my baby, if he is ready too.

Expenses:

Admin fees      RM  4.00
Consultation    RM 50.00
Ultrasound      RM 50.40
Medication      RM 28.35
TOTAL          RM 132.75

Week-34 and counting

Last week was my 34th week check-up.

Date: 14 Mac 2012 (Wed)
Appointment Time: 9:30 am
Waiting Time: 45 mins

Blood pressure: 70/107
Weight Gain: + 1kg
Urine: normal

My water retention condition has become more serious as the baby grows bigger.  My feet and ankles were obviously swollen, even in the morning (it used to become obvious only in the evening). This has also worsen the condition of my Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. Other than feeling numb, heaty, pain and stiff on my fingers, my wrists started to ache as well. Since my blood pressure and urea are normal, there is nothing the doctor can do other than telling me these are part and parcel of pregnancy, especially for first time pregnancy because my body is adapting to the body changes for the first time. However, despite all these 'painful' experience, I will not want to have the baby to come earlier in exchange for the relief of the above symptoms. I want my baby to develop to his optimum level in my stomach until full term, if possible until 40 weeks. No pain, no gain, isn't it?

Baby heart beat: 159 bps
Baby weigh: 2.3kg
Amniotic fluid level: optimum
Position: head down, condusive for natural birth

There was no nice picture of the baby taken again this time as his face was facing to the side and he constantly covered his head with his hands! What a shy boy!

Hubby took this picture with Dr. Paul's consent during the ultrasound session.
I will go back again for another check-up in week-36. After that the check-up will be on weekly basis to closely observe if there is any symptom of baby arriving earlier than the EDD on 25 Apr 2012.

Expenses:

Consultation            RM  50.00
Ultrasound               RM  50.05
Admin Fees             RM    4.00
Diagnostic/monitoring RM  0.60 ( what is this for? this is the first time for this item to appear in the bill.)

TOTAL                  RM 104.65

Week 32 - Maternity Check-up

This entry will be a short one due to my 'super numb' fingers caused by Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

Date: 29 Feb 2012
Appointment: 10 am
Waiting time: 10 min.

Blood Pressure: 95/65.  I thought this was a bit on the low side, but Dr. Paul said there was nothing to worry about it.

Weight Gain: 1kg ( gained in 2 weeks, so it was acceptable. I guess my effort to eat only nutritious food but not tasty food is showing the result!)

Ultrasound of baby: Baby has settled in the head down position. The chances for natural birth is high. But his face is facing my back (spinal cord), so his facial features remained mysterious to us this week.

Baby's weigh: 1.97kg (gained 270gm compared to 2 weeks ago)

Heart beat: 137 bpm (normal)

Before the ultrasound, I had just told Dr. Paul how agressive my baby was punching and kicking these few days. But for the 2nd time in a row, baby was fast asleep during the ultrasound sessions. Looks like my baby is 'camera' shy :)

Expenses:

Consultation RM  50.00
Ultrasound   RM  50.40
Admin Fees RM    4.00

TOTAL       RM 104.40

Motherhood Expo @ KLCC Convention Centre

Hubby and I visited the Motherhood Expo held at KLCC Convention Centre last Saturday.
It was very crowded.  The expo hall was filled with expecting mothers, parents pushing their babies in strollers, and also running kids. Honestly, the environment was not very conducive for pregnant ladies, we have to truly pay attention to avoid many hidden obstacles while trying to walk in the hall. Not to mention, the super long queue at the toilets.

Anyway, we finally booked the baby cot for our baby boy.  It was the same cot that we have planned to buy from a baby shop called One Stop Baby Centre, situated in Uptown, Damansara (same row as AmBank and CIMB).  The shop participated in this expo and the same cot was having a good promotion. The package came with a cot, a coconut fibre mattress and a 6-piece-bedding set, all in for RM650 (inclusive of free delivery and fixing).  We did not hesitate long before purchasing the set as the original price in the shop was RM799 and the delivery charges was another addition of RM80. An arrangement has also been made to deliver the cot in the mid of April, nearer to my expected delivery date.

Model: TW-C25B(GR) (Japan Export Model)
Features :
•Three level adjustable base
•Non toxic finish
•Easy to assemble
•C/w small door at bottom for storage purpose
•Swivel castor with brakes

I also managed to grab 3 other products at very good prices, Bio-Oil 125ml (at RM47), Sunsweet Prune Juice (2 bottles for RM15, originally 1 for RM11.50) and Ghee Hiang Sesame Oil (2 big bottles for only RM30, used for cooking Chinese confinement food).

Constipation is a common problem faced by many pregnant ladies. I was lucky to discover that there were 3 types of food that can help me combat this difficulty, since the very beginning of my pregnancy. They are pitted prune, prune juice and dragon fruit.

Since entering the 3rd trimester, I couldn't afford to walk long due to my swelling ankles and feet. So, we did not stay long before heading home.  There will be another parenthood expo in Mid Valley from 9 to 11 March 2012. We will probably make a visit to buy baby carrier and stroller, that is if my feet allows!

Week-30 Maternity Check-up

15 Feb 2012 (Wed)

An appointment was made at 1:30pm to see Dr. Paul. But my husband and I waited until 2:20pm before we went into the doctor's room. Year 2012, the year of dragon baby craze, waiting time of 50 minutes should be considered 'reasonable', I guess.

My blood pressure (70/110), urine glucose and protein level appeared to be normal.  However, the doctor is a bit concerned about my weight gain. I put on another 4kg since the last time I saw him, which was about 4 weeks ago. In total I have gained 14kg since my pregnancy.  I honestly told the doctor I didn't eat for 2 and I do not have any cravings for special food. In fact, I ate the same amount of meal 3 times a day, the same as what I did before I got pregnant. The only difference now is that I have stopped going to the gym. I blamed the excessive weight gain on water retention because I noticed that my weight shot up since week 23, and that was about the same time I experienced feet and ankle swelling and suffered from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.

The doctor listened to me patiently (even though I guess he has heard the same answer many times from all the over-weight pregnant ladies, hahahha.....) . Dr. Paul said some ladies will suddenly gain excessive weight at certain period of their pregnancy, but it will then slow down again later. He asked me not to worry too much since my blood pressure and glucose level appeared to be normal. However, he wanted me to try to cut down the amount of food intake and reduce the materna milk to only 1 glass a day (currently I am taking 2 glasses a day, one in the morning, one before I go to bed). So, we will see how it goes when I see him again after 2 weeks.

The baby weighed 1.7kg, a normal weight for a baby in week-30. Heart beat was recorded at 147/min. Despite punching and kicking me like a kickboxer many times a day, my boy appeared to be unusually quiet during the ultrasound session. Dr. Paul said the baby was asleep so soundly (can tell from his sleepy chubby face). The only movement recorded was when he opened and closed his mouth occasionally. Aiyo, I did talk to him that morning, telling him that today we will visit uncle Doctor and he has to move his hands and legs during the 'photography' session, just to show papa and mummy he is a healthy active baby. But, obviously my effort was in vain as he was craving for his sleep so much during the cloudy afternoon.

The baby is sleeping. I know only the baby's own parents will be delighted when looking
at this kind of 'alien photo'. But this is part of our journey, please allow me. Thanks:)

The good news was my baby had turned down, with his head facing the birth canal.  Please baby, maintain this position for another 60 more days, so mummy can have a safe natural birth where both of us would not suffer too much. Also, money saved from natural birth will go to your education and toy fund! Be a co-operative good baby!

For the next 2 weeks, I will make an effort to eat only healthy food at a reasonable portion. I will also be more diligent in practising the prenatal exercise taught in the *antenatal classes. And the funny part now is everytime I thought of having some dessert like ice-cream or cakes, Dr. Paul's face will automatically appear in my mind. I told my husband about this and he couldn't stop laughing.
So far, my pregnancy is a smooth one, except for the Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, which is getting from bad to worse. Both my right and left palms and the fingers are constantly feeling numb, stiff and painful.  It took me ages to type this post.  But I have nothing to complain, I will endure this gracefully, just for my angel.

Expenses:
  • Consutation           RM 50.00
  • Ultrasound            RM 50.00
  • Obimin (1 month)  RM 12.60
  • Admin Fees          RM    4.00
         TOTAL                RM117.00

* My husband and I attended the antenatal programme conducted by Pantai Hospital. The programme runs every month, and there are 5 classes in total, covering topics from breastfeeding, nutrition in motherhood, labour process, pain relief during labour, care for new borns, prenatal exercise and labour suite tour.  The fees for the programme is RM300 per couple.

Bought my first breast pump

After some online survey and seeking opinions from experienced breast feeding mums, I decided to buy the first breast pump in my life, the Medela Swing.

I travelled all the way from Damansara to Setapak, just to enjoy the good bargain from One Baby World, a baby product specialty store. I found this store on the Internet and realized that they are giving away a lot of useful freebies when you purchase the breast pumps.

Bought this set at RM799

Got these items FOC:
1 Autumnz Cooler Bag
3 packs of Autumnz Reusable Ice Pack
8 bottles of Autumnz PP Milk Storage Bottles
1 pc of Autumnz Comfort Nursing Bra
1 unit of BPA Free Deluxe Bottle Drying Rack worth
1 unit of Receiving blanket
4 pcs Washable Breastpad
Other than Medela, the shop also carries a few other brands of breast pumps. For further details on other promotion, find out more from One Baby World's website

During my visit to the store, Janet was the friendly sales person (most probably also the owner), that offered me great advice on what products to buy and what is not necessary to buy. As a first time mother, I personally like the service, because they provide impartial guidance on what you really need rather than encourage you to buy everything, just to increase their sales transaction. Most importantly, they do not intend to sell you the most expensive brands. Thus, you can save money by buying compatible brands that suit your budget.

AddBought a set of steam steriliser and bottle & food warmer.

Also purchased some additional pairs of nursing bras and breastmilk storage bottles.

I spent about 2 hours in the shop and swiped away my annual local holiday budget :).  Hopefully,  all these items will bring me a certain degree of convenience when I return to work after my maternity leave.
